Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Dr. Bookout is a Fellow of the American Society for Mohs Surgery and has completed over 9,500 cases. She performs this precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer, in her office using a local anesthetic. Mohs surgery is most commonly used to treat basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. During Mohs surgery, layers of  skin are progressively removed and examined microscopically until only cancer-free tissue remains.

The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove all of the cancer cells, while leaving as much of the healthy tissue as possible. Mohs surgery is an improvement to standard surgery as it allows the surgeon to verify that the cancer cells have been removed at the time of surgery. This reduces the risk of recurrence and the need for additional treatment. Once cancer has been removed, she and the patient decides whether to allow the wound to heal naturally, to repair it surgically, or enlist the services of a plastic surgeon.
